Lecture Abstract: 2025 marked the 50th anniversary of Ivan Illich’s controversial Medical Nemesis, which opened with the now-famous claim that “the medical establishment has become a major threat to health.” Less noticed is Illich’s prediction that this threat would eventually generate a growing demand for euthanasia and assisted suicide. This lecture will explore Illich’s account of cultural iatrogenesis (the loss of moral culture due to healthcare) and argue that the modern loss of the ars moriendi—the art of dying well—has contributed to the “meaning crisis” helping to drive this demand. It concludes by identifying specifically Christian resources for recovering the ars moriendi.
