Summer Safety Series: Beat the Heat and Get Acclimatized!

Maureen Keyte - Monday, June 8
 6.8.26

Working in hot environments? Heat acclimatization is key to staying safe and productive. It’s the process of gradually training your body to handle the heat.

Here’s why it matters:

• Reduces risk of heat illness – Acclimatization helps you sweat more efficiently, keeping your core temperature cooler and preventing heat stroke.

• Boosts performance – You’ll feel less drained by the heat, allowing you to tackle tasks with more energy.

• Safer workdays – Everyone benefits from a heat-acclimatized workforce.

How to acclimatize:

• Start gradually. OSHA recommends the 20% rule. On the first hot day, work no more than 20% of the shift’s duration at full intensity in the heat and increase by 20% each day.

• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after work in the heat.

• Listen to your body. Take breaks in cool spaces and avoid overexertion.

• Dress for the heat. Wear a hat and light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing.

Please watch out for each other. Monitor yourself and others for signs of heat illness. By prioritizing heat acclimatization, we can keep everyone safe and keep the work flowing smoothly.
