As the weather warms up, more people will be riding bicycles, skateboards, and scooters, and these activities face a host of hazards.
Here are some basic tips:
- Check your equipment prior to riding. Don’t use it if it needs repair.
- Dress for the weather and wear bright colors. Use lights or wear reflective clothing when riding at night.
- Wear a properly fitting helmet on every ride regardless of the length
- The helmet should fit snug, adjust sizing pads or fit ring and tighten chin strap.
- Position the helmet level on your head, covering the forehead and not tipped backward or forward.
- When fitted, the helmet should not rock more than 1-inch on your head\
- If skateboarding, add wrist guards and knee/elbow pads.
- Don’t bike, skateboard, or scooter on crowded walkways.
- Obey the rules of the road.
- Ride bicycles in the direction of traffic and follow lane markings.
- Do not skateboard or scooter in the street.
- Remain alert.
- Don’t wear headphones
- Watch for opening car doors and other hazards in your path.
- Use hand signals when turning and use extra care at intersections.
