Weekly Safety Tip: Charge Batteries Safely

Maureen Keyte - Monday, October 12
 10.12.26
Lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life, powering our phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices. While convenient, damaged or improperly charged batteries can overheat and cause fires.

Keep these charging habits in mind:
  • Use the right charger: Use the charge that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Choose a safe charging location: Charge devices on a hard, flat surface rather than on a bed, couch, or under blankets.
  • Keep an eye on charging devices: Avoid leaving devices charging unattended for long periods or while you are sleeping.
  • Watch for warning signs: Stop using a battery if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells unusual, or shows other signs of damage.
  • Keep batteries away from heat: Store and charge devices away from anything that could catch fire.
  • Don’t use damaged batteries or chargers: Replace damaged equipment and follow manufacturer guidance for disposal.
A few simple habits can help keep you and our campus community safe!
