The holidays are here, and it’s time to decorate – but before you get into the festive spirit, please be mindful of any hazards and stay safe with these quick tips:
- Choose Wisely: Only use UL-listed lights and extension cords. Always inspect for damage first.
- Watch Your Step: Keep cords and decorations out of walkways to prevent trips.
- Turn Off When Unattended: Switch off lights and decorations before leaving or going to sleep.
- Hang with Care: Never nail or tack wiring. It can cause damage or create a fire hazard.
Ladder Safety:
- Use ladders only in calm, dry weather.
- Maintain 3 points of contact – 2 feet + 1 hand or vice versa.
- Don’t lean or overreach – move the ladder instead.
- Never stand on the top step.
Fire Safety First:
- Keep all decorations 3 feet from heat sources.
- Use only flame-resistant decorations.
- Never leave cooking unattended.
Important Reminder: Candles, incense and real trees, wreaths, and branches are prohibited in residence halls due to fire risks.
Now you’re all set to decorate with both style and safety in mind!
