Weekly Safety Tip: Today is National Concussion Awareness Day

Maureen Keyte - Monday, September 21
 9.21.26
Concussions are commonly associated with sports injuries but can also be brought on by other activities, such as vehicle collisions, falls, etc. A concussion is a brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth.

Signs and symptoms generally show up soon after the injury, however, you may not know how serious the injury is at first and some symptoms may not show up for hours or days. You should continue to check for signs of concussion right after the injury and a few days after the injury. If there’s any concern you have a concussion, you should get medical assistance right away.

Symptoms of Concussion can include:
  • Inability to recall events before or after a hit or fall.
  • Appearing dazed or stunned.
  • Moving clumsily.
  • Answering questions slowly.
  • Losing consciousness.
  • Showing mood, behavior, or personality changes.
  • Headache or “pressure” in your head.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Balance problems, dizziness, or double or blurry vision.
  • Being bothered by light or noise.
  • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy.
  • Confusion, or problems with concentration or memory.
  • Just not “feeling right,” or “feeling down”.
