Weekly Safety Tip - Stay Safe in Winter Weather

Maureen Keyte - Monday, January 26
 1.26.26

Cold, snow, and ice can turn everyday campus activities into hazards. Keep yourself and others safe by following these winter-smart tips:

Dress for the Cold

  • Wear layers to trap heat and stay dry.
  • Cover exposed skin with hats, gloves, and scarves.
  • Choose insulated, slip-resistant footwear.

Shovel Safely

  • Push snow instead of lifting when possible.
  • Take breaks and avoid overexertion.
  • Watch for warning signs like chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath.

Walk & Drive with Caution

  • Walk slowly and watch for icy steps, ramps, and entrances.
  • Use handrails and keep your hands out of your pockets.
  • Drive slower than usual and increase following distance.
  • Never use cruise control on snow or ice.

A few extra minutes and a little extra caution can prevent injuries and keep our campus moving safely all winter long. Stay alert – and stay safe!
