Cold, snow, and ice can turn everyday campus activities into hazards. Keep yourself and others safe by following these winter-smart tips:
Dress for the Cold
- Wear layers to trap heat and stay dry.
- Cover exposed skin with hats, gloves, and scarves.
- Choose insulated, slip-resistant footwear.
Shovel Safely
- Push snow instead of lifting when possible.
- Take breaks and avoid overexertion.
- Watch for warning signs like chest pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath.
Walk & Drive with Caution
- Walk slowly and watch for icy steps, ramps, and entrances.
- Use handrails and keep your hands out of your pockets.
- Drive slower than usual and increase following distance.
- Never use cruise control on snow or ice.
A few extra minutes and a little extra caution can prevent injuries and keep our campus moving safely all winter long. Stay alert – and stay safe!
